McCall Smith to start building of new hospice



TOP author Alexander McCall Smith is to cut the sod at the building of a new hospice today.

The man behind The No1 Ladies Detective Agency books will kick-start the construction of create a new state-of-the-art St Columba’s Hospice.

The hospice will replace a now-demolished building overlooking the Firth of Forth.

Alexander McCall Smith said: “St Columba’s Hospice has touched the lives of so many people in Edinburgh and it is wonderful that the Hospice is now being totally transformed.

“I know from personal experience the value of the care and attention given to patients and their families at a difficult time.

“The new building will provide more comfort for patients, for their family and their friends, and a fitting environment for the staff to continue this care. I’m delighted to be able to support St Columba’s Hospice at this important time.”

Margaret Dunbar, Chief Executive, St Columba’s Hospice said: “We are committed to building a Hospice which will ensure that we continue to deliver the highest quality Specialist Palliative Care to the people of Edinburgh & the Lothians for future generations.

“It will be wonderful to see the construction work begin as this follows many years of planning and fundraising.  Everyone is looking forward to returning to our spiritual home in 2014 and beginning the next chapter in St Columba’s Hospice history.”
