Our house – in the middle of a terraced London street: Home belonging to Madness lead singer on sale for cool £1.5m

HOUSE-HUNTERS have been offered the chance to snap up a £1.5m home belonging to the lead singer of iconic ska band Madness.

The four-bedroom house in Islington, Greater London belongs to lead vocalist Graham ‘Suggs’ McPherson, and served as the inspiration for Madness’ hit song Our House.

The band rose to prominence in the late 70s and were one of the biggest bands in Britain during the 80s, boasting hits like Our House, It Must Be Love and Baggy Trousers.

Now it seems 62-year-old Suggs is moving on from his house of fun – quite literally set in the middle of a street – offering music buffs the chance to own a slice of history.

The interior of the property sprawls over five floors, and includes the four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge reception room and a small study.

The living room houses two colourful sofas as well as a fireplace and tasteful decoration throughout.

The open plan kitchen and dining rooms are homely and old-fashioned, featuring weathered wooden flooring, a hearth by the dining table and stag antlers mounted on the wall.

Every bedroom is more spacious than the last with great views of the garden and allowing an array of natural light to seep in, a rarity for any London property.

Two bathrooms also feature, one entirely decorated with marble which features a shower unit and another with a huge bath in a room painted predominantly pink.

Subtle nods to the history of the current owners are dotted around the home, such as a framed poster for Madness in one of the bedrooms, and chart certifications hanging from the walls.

The house boasts a study and a utility room as well as a large patio garden space which is ideal for hosting get-togethers or relaxing in the sun.

Estate agents Keatons have described the house as: “A truly stunning four bedroom, two bathroom Victorian house conveniently located on this pretty tree-lined street.

“Encompassing over 2500 sq. ft., this beautiful house boasts many original features and comprises a stunning kitchen/diner with stripped wood flooring, a large double reception leading to its own private patio garden, separate study, well-proportioned double bedrooms, a shower room and main bathroom with roll-top bath.

The property has attracted attention on social media, with one user sharing a picture of the house on Saturday.

Their caption read: “This was known locally as ‘our house’, as apparently it was the house that inspired the song.

“I used to live opposite him for a few years, he was a really nice guy and even leant me his hedge trimmer once.”

The post has since received over 640 likes and more than 100 comments from users left wowed by the listing.

One person commented: “Off to see Madness on 17 June, my first gig in years so really looking forward to it.

“Wonder if I could have a word about maybe dropping his price to around hmm a quid? Maybe £2 if I skip my avocado toast?”

Another wrote: “Doesn’t really look like a castle or a keep.”

A third said: “Lovely house. I’d take the precariously stacked bakeware dishes over a strategic F&M hamper any day.”

Another replied: “Nice home, really nice actually. £1.5m though – I know its London, but my Glasgow brain just can’t get my head around that kinda price for that amount of space.”

Properties in Tufnell Park had an overall average price of £748,901 over the last year, according to Rightmove.
